Hands are the one body part that makes even experienced illustrators hesitate. The good news: they're far more approachable once you stop drawing fingers first.
Start With Simple Shapes
Block in the palm as a rounded box and the fingers as simple cylinders before any detail goes in. Get the proportions and gesture right at this stage — it's much easier to fix a shape than to fix five individually-drawn fingers that don't agree with each other.
Common Mistakes
- Drawing fingers as flat, same-length sausages instead of tapering shapes
- Ignoring the thumb's independent range of motion
- Skipping the underlying palm shape and jumping straight to outlines
Once the shape language feels natural, hands stop being the part of a piece you dread — they become just another shape to design, like anything else.
