Creating immersive environments requires a different set of instincts than character work — the whole canvas has to hold attention, not just one figure in it. Here's how we approach it.
Starting with a Vision
Every environment starts with a clear vision. We gather references, sketch rough compositions, and establish the mood before diving into details — deciding early whether a scene should feel vast and lonely, cluttered and lived-in, or quiet and ominous.
Composition & Lighting
A single strong light source does more work than a dozen small details. We block in the major shapes and values first — sky, ground, silhouettes of large structures — and only add fine detail once the lighting already reads correctly in grayscale.
Mood & Atmosphere
Fog, dust, color grading, and depth-of-field blur are what turn a technically accurate environment into one with atmosphere. This is usually the very last pass, and often the one that makes a client's reaction shift from "that's nice" to "that's exactly the feeling I wanted."
Environment work rarely gets the spotlight character illustrations do, but it's some of our favorite work precisely because it's a bigger puzzle — every element has to agree with every other element for the whole scene to feel like one real place.
