Why We Don't Use AI in Our Art

This is a topic we get asked about constantly, so we'd rather answer it precisely than with a slogan. The short version: we use AI as a tool for running the business. We do not use it to make the art.

The Human Touch

Art is more than pixels on a screen. It's the result of a person making hundreds of small decisions — where a line curves, how saturated a shadow gets, whether a pose reads as confident or vulnerable. Every one of those decisions carries meaning that a generative model simply cannot originate, because it isn't making a decision — it's producing a statistical average of decisions other people already made.

Where AI Actually Fits Into Our Process

We'd be lying if we said AI never touches ILUZTAR at all. It does — just nowhere near the canvas. We've used it for brainstorming a character concept when we're stuck, or for drafting a reply to a client faster during a busy week. That's the same category as using a spell-checker or a calendar app: a business tool, not a creative one.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

Edgar Degas

The One Rule We Don't Break

No AI generation tool ever touches a sketch, a lineart, a color layer, or a final render — not as a base to paint over, not as a shortcut for a background, not for anything. If a piece has the ILUZTAR name on it, it was drawn by hand, start to finish. That's not a marketing line; it's the one rule the entire studio is built around.
