We sketch far more than we ever finish. Deciding what's worth carrying through to a full render is its own skill — one that took longer to learn than rendering itself.
Ask What It Proves
A strong portfolio piece usually demonstrates something specific — a style, a technical skill, a kind of storytelling — rather than just being a nice drawing. If a sketch doesn't clearly show something a client would want to see more of, it's a lower priority.
Signs It's Worth Finishing
- The gesture or composition already works at thumbnail size
- It fills a gap in the current portfolio — a style or subject not shown yet
- It still feels interesting after a day away from it, not just in the heat of sketching
Everything else stays a sketch. That's not wasted time — it's just not portfolio time.
