Understanding Character Design
Character design is more than just drawing a pretty picture. It's about creating a visual story that communicates personality, background, and purpose before a single word of dialogue is written.
Key Elements
- Silhouette — a strong silhouette makes a character instantly recognizable, even in shadow
- Color Palette — colors convey emotion and personality at a glance
- Costume Design — clothing tells us about the character's background, role, and status
- Facial Expressions — the window to the character's personality and current state
The Genres We Gravitate Toward
Left to our own devices, ILUZTAR leans toward a flat, minimalist visual style with a modern, slightly futuristic edge. Our favorite genres to design in are RPG, action, gothic, fantasy, and magic — the kind of worlds that reward sharp, tense silhouettes and mechanical detail worked into armor, weapons, or accessories.
That preference shows up even in commissions outside those genres: we tend to push for a bit more visual tension in a pose, a bit more intention behind an accessory, because that's the design instinct we've built over years of drawing characters who are meant to feel like they're mid-story, not standing still for a portrait.
